Tricker’s
Established 1829
For 180 years Tricker’s shoes have been handmade in Northampton. The year was 1829 when Joseph Barltrop founded the company. To set the scene from an historical perspective, that same year saw Robert Peel establish London’s first uniformed police force, whilst in America, Abraham Lincoln gave his first political speech. Louis Braille invented his system of finger reading for the blind and Queen Victoria’s ascent to the throne was still eight years away. Tricker saw the birth of the modern world, a time for great enlightenment, learning and social reforms. This was the world in which the first retail orders for Tricker’s shoes were secured.

Lavenham
Established 1969
Our story begins in 1969 in Lavenham, a small village in Suffolk, England. Mrs Elliot – as she always preferred to be known – sought better quality horse rugs for her stables.
The brand’s iconic Raydon jacket – the prototype for quilted equestrian jackets the world over – was conceived with the sartorially aware rider in mind: slim cut, with back vents to sit over the back of a saddle, finished with a neat corduroy collar and simple press stud fastenings. Still manufactured in England, using British materials wherever possible, the styling of the jacket remains largely unchanged today.
Merz b.Schwanen
Established 1911
Founded in 1911 by Balthazar Merz, the family-business was one of the leading clothing manufacturers in the Swabian Alps during the 19th century. In 2010, the Berlin based designer and studied menswear tailor Peter Plotnicki discovered an original workwear-shirt by the historic manufacturer at a flea market. Inspired by the touching story the textile was telling, he and his wife Gitta Plotnicki embarked upon a journey into the past and breathed new life into the brand. Since then, the distinctive products of Merz b. Schwanen are again, just like back in the day, manufactured in the Swabian Alps on rare original loopwheelers from the 1920s to the 1960s and are sold all over the world.

All the waterproof and protective clothing ranges were relabelled “Yarmouth Stores” and the company went on to export oilskins, knitwear and clothing to markets throughout the world. The company opened stores in ports throughout the UK and before the Second World War employed more than 1200 people, the majority of them machinists making overalls, uniforms, smocks and other workwear in our factories in Great Yarmouth.
BARACUTA
Established 1937
The history of the Baracuta brand originates in Manchester, an industrial heartland in the northwest of England. Given the industrial background of the city and its climatic conditions, it is understandable that a number of cotton-rainwear manufacturers began operating in the area. One of them was a company called Baracuta, owned by brothers John and Isaac Miller. Their principal activity was the production of raincoats for brands such as Burberry and Aquascutum.
In the 1930s the Miller brothers began to develop the Baracuta name as an independent brand, and they created a number of unique designs, each with an alphanumeric codename. At the time, the success of their manufacturing business had afforded them the opportunity of joining Manchester’s social elite by becoming members of the local golf club, and in 1937 they developed a short, waterproof zipper-jacket that could be worn on the course. The design offered sufficient freedom of movement to allow players to strike the ball without restriction; it eventually became know as the “swing jacket” in Japan, but the company referred to it by the designated codename, G9 (the G indicating “Golf”).
The Baracuta G9 jacket has been worn by everyone, from rock legends and movie icons to sports-stars and street-gangs to James Bond and Superman. It is an original British classic that has been much copied but never bettered, and a garment that all men should have in their wardrobes at some point in their life.
In the style stakes you cannot beat originality, so no matter what colour you prefer, if you are considering the purchase of a Harrington jacket, make sure it’s a Baracuta G9.
